OGDEN — The pivotal moment in the Ogden and Bonneville football game Friday came with time expired, the clock reading zeros.

Ogden defensive lineman Ryan Kirkland blocked a Bonneville extra-point kick after the Lakers scored on the final play of the first half, and the Tigers held on for a 7-6, nonregion victory over their nearby neighbors.

“We just gotta flush out. We gotta try our best…keep the extra point off the board and that’s what we were able to do,” Kirkland said. “I play a little bit of basketball; got the jumps with me, so it helps a lot on the inside … got the length for sure.”

At 6-foot-7, Kirkland is also on the Ogden hoops team, and performed in front of his ex-coach, Trent Porter, who recently took Bonneville’s athletic director job.

“I’m pretty excited for that; we just played our coach’s school. That was a lot of fun,” Kirkland said.

The Tigers (1-1) scored their only points of the game on their first possession: an 11-play, 80-yard march climaxed by a 10-yard Emmett Rector to Nash Bockwoldt toss after Bockwoldt wrestled the ball away from the Bonneville defender.

Bockwoldt also had a 38-yard reception on the drive, and Colton Rasmussen converted the all-important extra point for a 7-0 Ogden lead with 3:59 left in the first quarter.

Bonneville’s (0-2) touchdown came on a drive starting at its own 49 after recovering an Ogden fumble.

Thirteen plays later, the Lakers found the end zone on a 3-yard Luke Loughton to Boston Chipman pass as time expired in the second quarter.

But in a telling trend for the game, it took the Lakers six plays (with penalties) to get in from the 10-yard line while Ogden created a roadblock.

“We went big up front; we tried our best to not let them penetrate through the middle. Shout out to our backs for stopping most of that,” Kirkland said. “We tried bringing as much pressure as we could, to make them as uncomfortable as we could.”

The Lakers came out in a trick formation for the extra point try, but the Tigers didn’t bite. After a timeout, Bonneville lined up for the ill-fated PAT.

“They didn’t expect us to come out, knowing what they were going to do. Then they decided to tie it up rather than go for two. It worked out well for us,” Kirkland said.

In a scoreless second half, Ogden turned the ball over on downs inside the Bonneville 5 in the fourth quarter and had to stop two final Laker thrusts to eke out the win.

Defensive back Kos Crowther knocked away a fourth-down pass to halt one drive, and Julian Salgado intercepted a Loughton pass in the closing seconds to seal the deal.

“There were two receivers … one had a drag and one had either a slant or a post. They went in front of each other and the ball crossed both of their helmets … I saw it and went to go catch it and ran,” Salgado said. “It was really nerve-wracking, but the way we were playing throughout the whole game … I had confidence in us and trusted my teammates. They did what they had to do, and I focused on my job.”

To know if the game was sloppy or just a slugfest, the one fumble was Ogden’s only true turnover, and Bonneville didn’t cough the ball up until what was effectively the last play of the game on the interception.

Bonneville coach Connor McGuire was quoted earlier this year saying his offense would take what the defense gave them. So far, it has been six points in two games, alternating the freshman Loughton and junior Polo Afuvai at quarterback.

Ogden is now 14-22 all-time against the Lakers, a 3A school taking down a 5A rival on Friday.

“We didn’t care what class they were; we know we’re better than them, and have been the past few years, even though we haven’t played them,” Kirkland said. “We knew we could stay in this; we had confidence in ourselves.”
