Roy High gathers after defeating Weber High 10-0 in a nonregion baseball contest on Friday, March 13, 2026, at Roy High School in Roy.

ROY — Monty Vorwaller is stepping up to the plate, but no longer as Roy High’s head baseball coach.

After 13 years coaching prep baseball, Vorwaller will fill the shoes of 13-year athletic director Mike Puzey when the 2026-27 school year rolls around. Puzey resigned from the position earlier this spring to pursue an opportunity in alternative education within Weber School District.

Roy High announced the leadership change on Tuesday via the school’s official website with the following statement from Vorwaller:

“I am incredibly honored and excited for the opportunity to serve Roy High School as the new athletic director. Roy High has become a very special place to me, and I am grateful for the chance to continue serving our students, coaches, advisors, families and community.

“I have been extremely fortunate to work closely with (Puzey) and have learned a great deal from him and the way he has served Roy High School. I recognize that he leaves big shoes to fill, and I will do my best to live up to the foundation and the standards he has set for Roy High athletics and activities.”

It’s undetermined who will take over Roy’s baseball program.

Vorwaller compiled a 78-116 record in eight seasons with the Royals, and now stands on the administrative side of the fence with 10-plus years of experience working in education. A graduate of Weber State University, Vorwaller has made himself a visible part of the athletics community at Roy High in recent years.

“During my time at Roy High, I have been fortunate to support athletics and activities through coaching, maintaining facilities, helping with even operations, Hudl, livestreaming, filming, basketball statistics, MaxPreps and program support,” Vorwaller said.

“As athletic director, I am committed to supporting all programs and continuing to build a unified Royal culture centered on We R One — Ownership, Nobility and Excellence. I am proud to be a Royal and excited to serve our students, coaches, advisors Roy High School and the Roy community in this new role.”

Vorwaller becomes just the fourth administrator to hold the athletic director role at Roy High over the last five decades.

Northern Utah golfers headed for Junior PGA finals

Two Northern Utah golf phenoms are headed to the Lone Star State.

Morgan High’s Jace Benson finished two strokes behind Corner Canyon graduate and Utah Utes signee Will Pizza in the final round of the Junior PGA Utah qualifier on Tuesday at Glen Eagle Golf Course in Syracuse. Both golfers are now qualified for the Junior PGA Championships, July 28-31, at Fields Ranch in Frisco, Texas.

Benson is coming off a strong sophomore campaign, including his third-place individual finish at last year’s 3A boys golf state tournament. Teammate Caleb Rees took the runner-up spot six strokes behind champion Denver Douglas of Juab.

As a freshman, Benson participated in last year’s Junior World Championship.

Sparrow tapped Poly Bowl All-Star

Davis High football standout Bode Sparrow is the latest addition to the 2027 Adidas Polynesian Bowl All-Star lineup, the Kaysville native shared on Tuesday.

The 2027 Polynesian Bowl is scheduled for Jan. 15 at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Sparrow has narrowed his college list to four Power Four institutions, including two in-state rivals. BYU, Utah, Oklahoma and Oregon are all in play for the four-star wideout in a post shared to Sparrow’s Instagram earlier this spring.

Last fall, Sparrow followed up his All-Area Player of the Year sophomore campaign with 1,218 receiving yards, 18 total touchdowns and seven picks for the Darts.
