Prep roundup: Bear River reaches softball title series; West Field, Fremont baseball advance

SPANISH FORK — No. 2 Bear River High softball (25-6) scored seven runs in the sixth inning to trigger the run rule and eliminate No. 11 Deseret Peak (18-17) in a 12-2 victory Thursday to complete 4A bracket play at Spanish Fork Complex.

Bear River advances to the 4A championship series beginning with Game 1 at 11 a.m. Friday at BYU. The Bears will face No. 1 Desert Hills (29-3) after the Thunder beat Orem 7-6 in 10 innings. Game 2, and 3 if necessary, is Saturday.

Bri Gardiner hit a two-run home run for Bear River (26-6). Cora Miller added a solo dinger. Ali Roche hit an RBI triple. Kate Wilson batted 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, and pitched a complete game with five hits, one earned run and eight strikeouts.

DAVIS 10, FARMINGTON 0

KAYSVILLE — Ella Nielson hit 3 for 3 with a home run, a triple and three RBIs, and Serena Roth allowed two baserunners in a five-inning one-hitter as No. 5 Davis run-ruled No. 12 Farmington in Game 1 of a 6A first-round super regional series.

Roth also hit 2 for 4 with two RBIs for Davis (23-6) while striking out seven in the circle. Cambell Christensen tripled, and Chloe Peery and Jewel Korth each hit a double.

The teams will play Game 2 at 1 p.m. Friday. Game 3, if necessary, would follow.

BOX ELDER 15, CYPRUS 0

BRIGHAM CITY — Lucy Braegger pitched a no-hitter with six strikeouts and one walk as No. 2 Box Elder run-ruled No. 15 Cyprus (15-13) to win Game 1 of a 5A second-round super regional series in six innings.

Kailee Hall batted 4 for 4 with two home runs, one triple, three RBIs and four runs scored for Box Elder (24-3). Olivia Daniels went 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs. Maclee Willard batted 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI. Izibel Mason and Lucy Griffin each went 2 for 3 with a double and combined for three RBIs.

The teams will play Game 2 at 1 p.m. Friday. Game 3, if necessary, would follow.

WEST FIELD 7, PAYSON 6

TAYLOR — No. 13 Payson (15-15) took a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh inning, then No. 4 West Field scored two runs in the bottom half for a walkoff win in Game 1 of a 5A second-round super regional series.

Ellie Koford batted 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI for West Field (19-6). Brylee Leatherwood and Kadence Dyson each batted 2 for 3 while Ayzlee Sessions and Brinklee Hadley each hit a double. Hadley pitched a complete game with 13 hits, six earned runs and four strikeouts.

The teams will play Game 2 at 1 p.m. Friday. Game 3, if necessary, would follow.

SPANISH FORK 12, FREMONT 2

SPANISH FORK — No. 14 Fremont gave up three runs in the fifth inning for a run-rule loss at No. 3 Spanish Fork (21-7) in Game 1 of a 5A second-round super regional series.

Abigail Valdez batted 2 for 2 with a double for Fremont (15-16). Ashlynn Cottle hit a double. Brooklyn Himelright, Jocie Johnson and Olivia Broadbent each hit a single.

The teams will play Game 2 at 1 p.m. Friday. Game 3, if necessary, would follow.

MTN RIDGE 12, SYRACUSE 2

HERRIMAN — No. 11 Syracuse took a five-inning, run-rule loss in Game 1 of a 6A first-round super regional series at No. 7 Mountain Ridge.

Paizlee Prathan and Olivia Brown each hit 2 for 3 with a triple for Syracuse (15-11). Brown also doubled, as did Oaklee Derrickson.

The teams will play Game 2 at 1 p.m. Friday. Game 3, if necessary, would follow.

HERRIMAN 15, WEBER 0

HERRIMAN — No. 15 Weber ran into problems at No. 2 Herriman, committing seven errors and totaling one hit in a four-inning, run-rule loss in Game 1 of a 6A first-round super regional series.

Emery Hayes hit a double for Weber (6-22) and allowed eight earned runs in the circle.

The teams will play Game 2 at 1 p.m. Friday. Game 3, if necessary, would follow.

RIVERTON 14, LAYTON 0

RIVERTON — No. 16 Layton was up against it Thursday against No. 1 Riverton, committing six errors and totaling two hits against the top seed in a Game 1 loss of a 6A first-round super regional series.

Ryleigh Newey doubled and Nora Morrow singled for Layton (4-24).

The teams will play Game 2 at 1 p.m. Friday. Game 3, if necessary, would follow.


BASEBALL

WEST FIELD 15, OLYMPUS 3

TAYLOR — No. 4 West Field scored four runs in the fifth inning to trigger the run rule and eliminate No. 13 Olympus (17-11) in Game 2 of their 5A second-round super regional series.

Tyke Johnson batted 4 for 4 with two doubles, four RBIs and four runs scored for West Field (23-4). Luke Penland went 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs. Samuel Smith hit a two-run double. Kason Taylor batted 2 for 2 with a walk, two RBIs and three runs scored. Jarett Hill pitched a complete game, striking out eight while allowing three earned runs on seven hits.

The Longhorns advance to double-elimination bracket play. First up is No. 2 Maple Mountain at 11 a.m. Monday at Utah Valley University.

FREMONT 13, WASATCH 11

PLAIN CITY — No. 7 Fremont scored nine runs in the fifth inning to take a 13-6 lead and held off a No. 10 Wasatch (17-12) comeback bid to win their 5A second-round super regional series.

Ashur Clark slugged a home run and two doubles with two RBIs for Fremont (19-8). Calvin Cooper hit a grand slam. Tad Grange hit two doubles and drove in two. Crew Hudman batted 2 for 4 with a double. Adam Mikesell drove in three with two singles and a hit-by-pitch. Payson Malan got the win with two hits, two runs and three walks over 1 1/3 innings.

The Silverwolves advance to double-elimination bracket play, first facing No. 21 Skyline at 7 p.m. Monday at UVU.

WEST JORDAN 8, ROY 6

WEST JORDAN — No. 22 Roy was eliminated with a Game 2 loss in a 5A second-round super regional at No. 6 West Jordan (20-7).

Lincoln Baty and Logan Vorwaller each hit three singles for Roy (12-17). Cache Summers batted 2 for 3 with an RBI. Julian Teran and Landon Hogge each hit a single and drove in two.

JORDAN 11, LAYTON 3

LAYTON — No. 8 Layton dropped Game 2 of their first-round super regional against No. 9 Jordan (15-12) and was eliminated from the 6A tournament.

Burkon Beus hit a triple and scored a run for Layton (18-8). Zane Morgan went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Jowell Dasni and Will Hoffman each went 2 for 4, with Dasni driving in one.

LEHI 15, DAVIS 3

LEHI — No. 12 Davis saw its season end, losing Game 2 of a 6A first-round super regional at No. 5 Lehi (16-10).

Cam Moody had a home run, a single and two RBIs for Davis (15-12). Kalen Weaver added a solo home run.
