Wyatt Penrod, center, and West Field celebrate a 9-6 win over Fremont High in extras during a region baseball contest on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at West Field High School in Taylor.

At least for one day, there’s a new hottest team in 5A baseball.

No. 4 West Field rallied for a whopping seven runs in the top of the seventh and held on for an 11-10 victory over No. 1 Spanish Fork, reaching the final day of double-elimination bracket play with a 22-game winning streak intact after Tuesday’s nightcap at Utah Valley University.

With a 10-4 lead entering the final frame, it looked like the reigning champion Dons (25-4) — who entered 35-4 since last year’s regular-season finale and improbable state title run — had the Longhorns’ bats suppressed despite West Field averaging 12.7 runs per game during its winning streak.

Luke Penland breathed life into the West Field (25-4) offense with an RBI double in the seventh. After Grady Garrett wore a hit-by-pitch to load the bases, Samuel Smith drove in two more with a single, making it 10-7.

Brady Penland nearly tied the game with a long ball off the left-field fence, just missing a homer by a couple feet. Instead, the long single scored one for a 10-8 tally. With zero outs, Marshal Moon cleaned up for Brady Penland close call, ripping a triple to right field and tying the game 10-10.

With one out, it was Kason Taylor with the eventual winner, poking a single to left. WF head coach Tyler Barfuss gave two muted fist pumps as Moon trotted home, and the Longhorns led 11-10.

Moon and Taylor played key roles when Spanish Fork mounted an answer. Moon took over on the mound against the only playoff foe thus far to force the Longhorns to their bullpen. With one out, Dons first baseman Sammy Dart ripped an 0-2 pitch down the third-base line for a double.

Trigg Cloward followed with a choppy grounder to shortstop, where Taylor fielded a tough short hop and cleaned it up for an out as Dart advanced to third.

With the tying run 90 feet away, Moon fought back from down 3-1 against SF’s Pratt Morley, freezing him with a curveball in the zone before throwing one past him for a swinging strikeout, sending the Longhorns into celebration.

Smith, Moon, Brady Penland and Wyatt Penrod each had two hits for West Field. Jarett Hill (4 1/3 innings) and Ricardo Rodriguez (2/3) allowed 10 earned runs on 11 hits through five innings; McCoy Cluff and Moon each allowed one hit and struck out one in one relief inning apiece.

West Field next plays at 7 p.m. Wednesday, awaiting the winner of the 1:30 elimination game between Spanish Fork and No. 21 Skyline, that after Skyline beat No. 9 Payson in an elimination game Tuesday afternoon.

The Longhorns will get two chances (with an if-game tentatively scheduled for Thursday) to reach the 5A championship series scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

Starting at $4.32/week.
