HERRIMAN — Seth Jones routinely teaches the Fremont girls lacrosse team all three levels of the field, but Thursday’s exam demanded a bit more than the basics.
Natalia Szwajkun and No. 1 Park City proved the better of the two 5A powers, a 19-9 decision in the Silverwolves’ second state championship appearance since winning the title in 2024. The Miners rode Szwajkun’s game-high eight goals to victory and lifted the trophy Thursday at Zions Bank Stadium.
In the immediate moments after the clock died, Fremont players didn’t drift off the field. They ran, into each other’s arms. Soon they held the runner-up trophy with the same pride their coach, Seth Jones, has come to admire from this year’s team.
“We’ve got heart for days and these girls just put in the work,” Jones said. “These girls put in the work, and just to get here in this place is phenomenal.”
Park City’s four state titles is second only to Bear River, which earned its fifth in the 4A finals earlier in the day. It’s a matchup Jones has longed for since speaking with the Standard-Examiner in April.
“Park City is that damn good,” Jones, 69-24 in his Fremont career, said. “We’ve got nothing to say but good things about them. For us to come out, I probably have my numbers wrong, but the state champion in 6A (Riverton) didn’t do as well as we did against that team as far as points. … They’re dominant.”
Fremont’s third loss of the season, bringing its campaign to a close at 18-3 overall (including a perfect 12-0 run in Region 5) didn’t come without pushback, though. The Silverwolves, feeding off two second-quarter goals by Clara McCormick, generated a clear momentum shift.
Down 9-3 after the first quarter, Fremont’s defense, anchored by junior Greeley Kelley in goal, held Park City (19-2) to just three more goals to enter halftime down 12-6.
Makenzi Overdiek and Brylee Jeppsen answered three Park City goals in the third quarter, and the Silverwolves dug in again defensively for four minutes. But Olivia Dalton, scooping up a ground ball off Coco Crawford, broke through with Park City’s 16th goal and the mojo they needed to go the distance.
It’s back to the drawing board for Jones and the Silverwolves, which will pick up the pieces this offseason without five seniors in Jeppsen, Bailey Sargent, Kemma Nunn, Autum Gbur and Kate Jenkins. Of all five Jones-led senior classes, this year’s lot finishes a win shy of that 2024 team that went 18-2 en route to the 6A title.
“Those five seniors have just played so well together, they’ve got such great chemistry,” Jones said. “Really, to lead our team this far, they’re going to remember this for the rest of their lives.”
