RIVERDALE — By two strokes, the Weber High boys golf team improved its lie.

Austin Bybee delivered the match-low score of 66 at Schneiter’s Riverside on Thursday and the Warriors captured the Region 1 regular-season finale ahead of the postseason.

Weber, carding 285 as a unit, evaded region frontrunner Farmington at 287; the Phoenix were led by Coulson Summerhays in second with 68 and Max Clapham in third with 69.

Bybee, swinging below Summerhays for the second time this season, is chasing his senior dreams with some dear friends. The Weber trio of Bybee (66), Hayes Torgersen (74) and Ben Boswell (78) are driving toward the region championship with high ambitions, their coach, Chris Torgersen, said after Thursday’s team win.

“I think that, talent-wise, we have the best team and the most depth that I’ve had ever since coaching,” Chris Torgersen said. “… It’s been a thrill to watch those guys as seniors that’ve all grown up together. They’ve all done really well.”

Two more Warriors popped into the top 10.

Crew Wood tied Layton’s Blake Butler for seventh at 72. Stockton Jardine tied Syracuse’s Sasha Clark, Brix Cragun and Layton’s Ryan Liechty, the younger brother of BYU golfer David Liechty, with a 73 in Thursday’s round.

Elsewhere, Layton’s Madden Barnes tied Davis High’s Jackson Gross at 71.

The upcoming Region 1 championship tournament is a two-day affair. Monday, Sept. 28, tees off at Eagle Mountain in Brigham City, then Tuesday, Sept. 29, concludes the region tournament at Schneiter’s Bluff in West Point.

Farmington’s Summerhays eager for second state try

Summerhays, the son of pro and former BYU golfer David Summerhays, is eager to redeem his first-ever state scorecard later this month at TalonsCove in Saratoga Springs.

It’s one of the young golfer’s favorite courses and, soon, the backdrop to what Farmington’s frontrunner describes as a much-needed comeback story. In last year’s state debut, Summerhays tied for 48th with a 13-over at Sleepy Ridge in Orem.

He’s turned it around, though, and Summerhays, entering Thursday’s region finale at Riverside, ranked fourth in the state with his 68.02 adjusted average.

“To know I can go compete with them, it’s a really good feeling,” Summerhays said. “I’m just ready to go back and do what needs to be done.”

Summerhays captured wins at Glen Eagle and Remuda, and holds five top-10 finishes this season, including two runner-up cards against Bybee.

Working the putter on Thursday, Summerhays powered through the rain and an early bogey to pencil in a 68 for his regular-season finale.

There’s no shortage of golf intel, given his family tree, but Summerhays, when asked about the key to surviving such a competitive region schedule, said he’s looked inward.

“I think it’s just hard work and consistency and trying to put down a good score every week,” Summerhays said. “I try to always stay in the moment, even when you get down on yourself. You stay focused and try to win the moment.”
