Owlz offense hammers Raptors to sweep weekend, win series

By Brett Hein - Standard-Examiner | Aug 20, 2023

After claiming Friday’s game, the Ogden Raptors could not stop the offense of the Northern Colorado Owlz over the weekend, allowing 38 runs and squandering a late Sunday lead to drop two games and lose the series at Lindquist Field.

Ogden (43-35, 12-18) travels Monday before a six-game road series at the first-place Rocky Mountain Vibes (38-39, 18-12) from Tuesday through Sunday.

The Raptors saw an 11-4 lead disintegrate in the final three innings to lose Sunday’s rubber match.

After Northern Colorado scored nine runs in the eighth inning, the lone bright spot for Ogden was Reese Alexiades socking his 24th homer of the season to reclaim the league lead.

With Alexiades hitting 2 for 4 with three RBIs, Ogden’s outfield combined to go 10 of 13 at the plate, driving in eight and scoring five runs. Josh Broughton hit 4 of 4 and Cam Phelts was 4 of 5.

After Ogden got down 4-1 early, Phelts tied the game with a three-RBI triple to begin what became a seven-run fourth inning for an 8-4 lead.

Usually strong Brandon McCabe took the beating in the eighth, allowing nine runs on six hits and three walks in just 1/3 of an inning.

OWLZ 20, RAPTORS 5

Northern Colorado scored six runs in the first inning against Brock Gilliam and Saturday night’s contest was a blowout from the start.

Henry George and Abdel Guadalupe each totaled four hits for the Owlz, and Euro Diaz drove in five runs. Nick Ultsch had three hits for Ogden.

Big lefty Will Buraconak, who was with Ogden in preseason camp before the Raptors traded him, got the win on the mound by allowing seven hits and two earned runs in six innings.
