Weber State football ended the 2023 season by dominating Cal Poly on both sides of the football, and a WSU player on each side of the football pulled in player of the week honors from the Big Sky Conference.

Freshman quarterback Richie Muñoz was named co-offensive player of the week, and sophomore linebacker Jack Kelly was given co-defensive player of the week honors.

The honor is the first career nod for Muñoz and second for Kelly.

Muñoz started his fifth game for Weber State and recorded six total touchdowns in the victory at Cal Poly. Muñoz threw 21 of 27 for 329 yards and five touchdowns, while also adding one rushing touchdown.

That was the first five-touchdown passing game by a WSU quarterback in 12 years (Mike Hoke, 2011).

In his five games, Muñoz — from West Covina, California — passed for 1,054 yards and 10 touchdowns with just one interception. He also ran for 93 yards and two touchdowns.

Including his senior season of high school, Muñoz has thrown for 50 touchdowns and four interceptions in his last 16 games as a starter.

Kelly has earned the nickname “Sack” Kelly after his sophomore campaign. At Cal Poly, Kelly totaled seven tackles, 2.5 for loss which included two sacks, forced a fumble and intercepted a pass.

His forced fumble at Cal Poly was a strip sack, which led immediately to a WSU field goal. His third-quarter interception set up a touchdown drive.

Kelly’s 10.5 sacks this season is fourth-most in FCS football. That’s also tied for fourth on WSU’s all-time single-season sack leaderboard. One of those sacks scored points, recording a safety at Idaho State.

A native of Kearns, Utah, Kelly also forced four fumbles this season. He has five career forced fumbles; teammate Winston Reid just wrapped up his career with nine forced fumbles, which is tied for first all-time at Weber State.

Those performances helped Weber State finish the season 6-5, the program’s ninth straight winning campaign, after beating Idaho, Cal Poly and No. 4 Idaho.
