Weber State notebook: Packer’s quick goal puts soccer over Cal Baptist

Weber State forward Simone Packer (7) tries to keep the ball against a challenge from North Dakota State's Kendall Stadden (10) on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2025, at Wildcat Soccer Field in Ogden.

It doesn’t come with a record designation but she’ll remember it all the same.

Weber State freshman Simone Packer tallied her first career goal 23 seconds into the second half and the Wildcats took down Cal Baptist 1-0 on Thursday night in Riverside.

WSU pushed the kickoff up the right side, where Presley Ray passed middle to Tenzi Knowles. Knowles threaded the ball forward to Packer, the Davis High alum, who fired a right-footed take at Cal Baptist (4-5-1) keeper Mikayla O’Brien.

O’Brien recorded one of her seven saves on the night, but Packer corralled the rebound and tucked a left-footed shot past O’Brien and into the bottom-right corner.

Just 23 seconds into the second half rivaled Ray’s record-setter from two weeks ago, when Ray scored 21 seconds into a win at Boise State.

Lauren Butorac saved four shots in goal for WSU (5-4), including one with 23 seconds left in the match.

Weber State wraps up nonconference play Sunday with a 1 p.m. MDT match Sunday at UC Santa Barbara (8-1-1).

VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO UVU

Weber State volleyball lost a second straight match for the first time this season, suffering a well-contested, 3-1 home defeat to Utah Valley on Thursday night in Ogden.

UVU outhit WSU .241 to .178 on the way to a 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22 victory.

One of Ashley Gneiting’s team-high 20 kills got the score to 20-19 in the first set but UVU won the next three points to take late control. WSU fell behind 9-4 in the second set but, at 20-20, won the next three points punctuated by a Gneiting service ace.

Tied 1-1, WSU opened the third set up 9-5 but UVU rallied to win 11 of the next 14 points, capped with one of Sami Blackett’s match-high 21 kills.

Weber had a 12-6 lead in the fourth set on a Jayda Tupea ace and another Gneiting kill; though UVU later evened things up, WSU still led 21-19 on a UVU service error but the Wolverines won six of the next seven points to take the match.

The Wildcats conclude nonconference play Saturday with a noon match at Utah State.

Starting at $4.32/week.
