SALT LAKE CITY — A Roy teen has been named Youth of the Year by the state Boys & Girls Club organization.

Aubrey Guerrero, a Roy High School junior, was picked Thursday over four other Boys & Girls Club members from around Utah to earn the honor. She’s active in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Weber-Davis, more specifically in the group’s Roy program.

“The club has been like a second family to her,” said Karlee Stoker, operations director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Weber-Davis, which serves Weber and Davis counties. Aubrey has been involved with the group for 10 years, ever since she was in first grade, and now serves as a tutor for younger children.

“We have amazing youth but have not won for 10 years,” said James Ebert, executive director of the Weber-Davis group. “She’s just an amazing young lady.”

Guerrero was named Youth of the Year at a ceremony Thursday morning at the Capitol in Salt Lake City. Other contenders for the title came from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Utah, Hill Air Force Base, the Greater Salt Lake City area and Utah County, according to Ebert.

With the honor, Aubrey — who aspires to be a pediatric surgeon — wins a $5,000 scholarship and moves on to the Western United States regional Youth of the Year competition in Los Angeles next July. The winner in California moves on to compete for national Youth of the Year honors.

Stoker said Aubrey started coming to the Roy club after her family moved from Ogden to the Roy area. Her stepmom needed a place where Aubrey could go after school and her siblings have also participated with the organization.

The Boys & Girls Club organization in Utah serves over 20,000 youth and teens per year, Ebert said.

Starting at $4.32/week.
