Letter: Dealing with America’s astronomic debt won’t be easy

Mar 22, 2024

If you started right now from one, and continued counting every second of every day, it would take you ≈ 11.5 days to count to one million; ≈ 31 years to count to one billion; and ≈ 31,000 years to count to one trillion.

As of 2024 — and per the government’s own projections — the INTEREST payments on US federal debt will be one trillion dollars. Think about that for a minute.

The issue of the national debt is easy to overlook or altogether forget about. The consequences of poor management don’t manifest in a rapid or linear fashion, but rather, unfold in complex and exponential ways, thus making it difficult to keep track of for anyone who isn’t employed as a CBO analyst. Yet still, there have been voices warning of impending catastrophe for decades, and for decades those voices have been ignored, shunned, and mocked. Well the balance of the U.S. government’s outgoing receipts now exceeds the balance incoming, and this means that cuts in federal spending are inevitable. The longer we wait the worse it’ll be.

There are a myriad of federal government programs which are obsolete, impractical, and downright fraudulent. The trick will be getting those who benefit from the obsolete, impractical, and fraudulent programs to relinquish those personal benefits for the good of the nation.
