SOUTH OGDEN — A man was arrested after he allegedly rammed his car several times into the back of a woman’s vehicle, then stripped nude, tackled a woman off her bicycle and fought with bystanders.
South Ogden officers responded to a report of an assault at about 8:30 p.m. Monday, finding several people holding down a naked man, identified as Shawn Bennett Smith, 22. Smith would not respond to questions, a police probable cause statement said.
A woman told police she was preparing to make a left turn at 850 East and 5300 South when Smith’s car rear-ended hers. He kept ramming her vehicle, off the street, onto a lawn and over a light pole, stopping against a brick wall.
The woman and Smith got out of their vehicles and she asked him why he had crashed into her and he gave a nonsensical answer, according to the affidavit. Then two people approached the crash to check on injuries and Smith allegedly stripped off his clothes, exposing his genitals.
Smith then noticed a woman riding by on a bicycle and he ran and pulled her off the bike, the affidavit said. The other people intervened and Smith allegedly began punching at them. A man driving by saw the fight, got out and tackled Smith, who was then held down until officers arrived.
An officer reported that he interviewed Smith at a hospital where he was taken for medical evaluation. The officer said Smith allegedly said he intentionally crashed his car into the woman’s vehicle and that he tackled the bicyclist to take the bike. Asked why he stripped, Smith allegedly told the officer, because “the music wasn’t working.” Smith also said he had been taking narcotics, the affidavit said.
Smith was jailed on suspicion of third-degree felony assault, two class B misdemeanor assault counts, class B misdemeanor lewdness and second-degree felony robbery.
