Prep softball: Weber run-rules Layton behind Kendall Strasburg’s complete game, Aliya Rhees’ 3 RBIs
PLEASANT VIEW — If it is too early in the season to call it a trend, then Weber High softball at least has a pattern in place through two games of region play, after run-ruling both opponents.
With the lousy spring weather conditions limiting the Warriors to only three games total, they have made the most of a difficult situation.
“We’ve been practicing in the gym a lot and have gotten really close as a team, because we’re always crammed together,” sophomore second baseman Aliya Rhees said. “We’ve simulated game after game and gotten really competitive.”
Weber took a big lead after two innings and finally put Layton away on Brylee Leatherwood’s single in the bottom of the fifth, laying it on Layton 14-4, in a Region 1 rout Tuesday.
“I think that we’re just all so excited to be outside, and we went in there swinging as hard as we could,” Rhees said.
Rhees walked in the first inning, had an RBI single in the third, then added a two-run single in the fourth as Weber took a 12-2 lead. She also scored two runs.
“I knew I had a job to do and wanted to hit the ball hard and get them in,” Rhees said.
Junior pitcher Kendall Strasburg escaped a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the first inning by striking out two straight batters, then settled down after that in the complete-game victory.
“The first inning honestly motivated me to get my pitches to work, hit my spots better and get out of the inning,” Strasburg said. “I haven’t pitched to many batters lately, so that was probably part of it.”
Weber batted around and scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, plated two more in the second and never looked back, with Strasburg in control.
Strasburg struck out eight in the first three innings and scattered seven hits among 12 K’s for the day. She struck out six in a row between the last two batters of the first inning, all three batters in the second and the first batter in the third.
Leatherwood had three singles, scored two runs and had an RBI for Weber (2-1, 2-0 Region 1), while Hadley Howell singled, scored a pair and drove in two.
Layton (0-2, 0-2) was undone by five wild pitches and two errors in the first two innings.
“That’s the learning curve of being young; we’re starting four freshmen and only have two seniors who play a lot, and a couple of juniors,” Layton coach Kiley Crockett said. “I’m excited for our future; we just have to keep grinding and get better as we go.”
Megan Child was on base twice with a walk and a single for Layton and stole two bases. Brenley Boydston and Riley Jaques each had two hits, and freshman Lexie Himle raced around the bases for an inside-the park home run.
