Prep roundup: Morgan boys basketball wins playoff game; 3A wrestling finals

MORGAN — Morgan High boys basketball used a 37-20 second half advantage to turn a one-point deficit into a 70-54 home win over Carbon (8-13) in the second round of the 3A state tournament Friday.

Aiden Harris scored a game-high 24 points with four 3-pointers for Morgan (16-6). Eli Bailey added 13 points and Kolton Asay tallied nine points on three treys.

The No. 5 Trojans advance to face No. 4 Grantsville at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at Southern Utah University. The Cowboys beat Morgan 55-38 on Jan. 13 and 46-40 on Feb. 1.

WOODS CROSS 49, BONNEVILLE 36

WASHINGTON TERRACE — Woods Cross outscored Bonneville in every quarter in a low-scoring road win.

Jaxon Smith led all scorers with 16 points and four 3-pointers for Woods Cross (18-8, 9-1 Region 5). Will Campbell added 14 points and four treys. Mason Bendinger tallied 13 points. The Wildcats made seven 2-point field goals, eight 3-pointes, and shot 9 of 11 from the foul line.

Nathan Burdett paced Bonneville (6-15, 2-8) with 12 points and two 3-pointers. Bo Dixon scored 11 points.

VIEWMONT 63, BOX ELDER 57

BOUNTIFUL — Box Elder led 16-13 after one quarter, then Viewmont took control with a 21-13 advantage in the second quarter.

Kaden Mitchell led Viewmont (9-14, 4-6 Region 5) with 14 points. Trevor Green and Scott Noel each scored 13 points with three 3-pointers.

Jackson McKee scored a game-high 22 points for Box Elder (13-8, 6-4). Gabe Sever tallied 10 points with two 3-pointers and Cooper Stevenson hit three treys for nine points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

WOODS CROSS 45, BONNEVILLE 40

WASHINGTON TERRACE — Woods Cross outscored Bonneville 11-6 in the fourth quarter for a region road win Thursday.

Georgia Hatton scored a game-high 17 points for Woods Cross (15-6, 6-4 Region 5). Katie King tallied 15 points with three 3-pointers and Kenna Cowley added 10 points.

Makenzie Call led Bonneville (4-16, 0-10 Region 5) with 10 points and three 3-pointers. McCall Monson and Libby Jensen each scored eight points with two treys.

GREEN CANYON 56, BEAR RIVER 35

NORTH LOGAN — Bear River was outscored 22-8 in the pivotal third quarter of a region loss at Green Canyon Thursday.

Jenna LaCroix led Bear River (10-10, 3-7 Region 11) with 12 points and two 3-pointers. Lexi Westmoreland scored nine points.

WRESTLING

3A STATE TOURNAMENT

At Thursday’s 3A/2A/1A combined girls wrestling championships in Richfield, Ogden High’s Tomi Rogers repeated as state champion with a 34-second pin in the 235-pound championship match against Juab’s Kilie Milberger.

On the boys 3A side, Morgan High 285-pounder Cole Keele won his championship match while the Trojans totaled 198 team points and finished second behind Juab’s 291.5 points.

5A STATE TOURNAMENT

Four Northridge High girls wrestlers advanced to the semifinals of the 5A state tournament during action Friday at Utah Valley University.

Senior Rachel Jones will face Tooele’s Lindsay Hansen in the 105-pound semifinal on Saturday at 11 a.m. at UVU, junior Mikalah Whitehouse takes on Woods Cross’ Kathryn De Groot at 130 pounds, senior Breanna Clanton meets Hillcrest’s Briona Love in the 140 semis and Emma Aviles wrestles Alta’s Ava Semchuck at 190 pounds.

Bonneville’s Hannah Bowler pinned both her opponents at 155 pounds to advance to a semifinal against Springville’s Hotaia Valeti.

As a team, the Knights have 87.5 points and sit in third place, behind Uintah (110) and Cedar Valley (100).

On the boys side, Box Elder’s Jackson Ricks breezed to the 132-pound semifinals with two wins Friday.

He’ll face Uintah’s Creeson Harrison on Saturday. Viewmont’s duo of Moses Espinoza-Owens (165) and Marcus Espinoza-Owens (175) advanced to the semis of their respective brackets.

Uintah (155) has a big lead over Payson (116) and Wasatch (114) in the boys team standings.

Finals matches are scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. at UVU on Saturday.

4A STATE TOURNAMENT

At the 4A state wrestling tournament in Richfield, Bear River’s boys team has 142.5 points after the first day of matches, behind first-place Mountain Crest’s 178.5 points.

Jaxon Morgan (106 pounds), Daxton Bingham (120), Max Miller (132), Ty Hawkes (138), Caleb Korth (144), Jarom Nelson (150), Braegger Richards (150), Kyle Detwiler (157), Vincent Fertig (165) and Kwade Kosoff (190) make a total of 10 Bears wrestlers in the semifinals.

On the girls side, Bear River trails Mountain Crest 147-138 in the team standings, and no other team has more than 45 points.

The Bears have 14 semifinalists: Sadie Hardy (100), Rachel Epling (105), SkyLynn Thompsen (110), Bella Gunderson (115), Kate Bunce (115), Samara Ward (120), Tassie Hatch (135), Abigail Trayhorn (140), Emma Peterson (140), Rhees Hatch (145), Eve Allsup (155), Crislyn Potter (170), Sydnee Nielson (190) and Bretlee Potter (235).

Mountain Crest has 15 semifinalists and a handful of semifinals pit the Bears against the Mustangs.
