Weber head volleyball coach Renae Birch visits with her team during a timeout vs. Corner Canyon during the second round of the 6A Girls Volleyball State Tournament Thursday, Nov. 7, 2024, at the UCCU Center at Utah Valley University in Orem.

PLEASANT VIEW – After six seasons, Renae Birch is setting aside her role as head coach of the Weber High girls volleyball program.

Birch, sharing that her family is expecting a child in February, confirmed the move to the Standard-Examiner on Tuesday. Birch and Weber just produced a fifth winning season at 22-8 overall, which included two region titles (2025 and 2023).

Weber, the No. 7 seed in the 6A postseason, dropped its state quarterfinal match to No. 2 Skyridge 3-0 last week at Utah Valley University.

The Warriors won just 14 combined games between 2019 and 2020 before Birch (120-71 with the Warriors) stepped into the head coaching job six years ago.

St. Joseph taps next football coach

St. Joseph Catholic High School introduced Carl Harry as its third head football coach on Tuesday, less than a week since the end of the 2026 season.

Top seed Rich ran it up on the No. 8 Jayhawks 56-20 in the 8-Man state quarterfinals last Friday, leading to a change at the head coaching position with Deshon Butler’s three-year tenure coming to an end at 13-18 overall at St. Joseph.

Harry, a former wideout for the Utah Utes and later a Super Bowl champion with the Washington Redskins (XXVI), takes on the job of steering the Jayhawks in the right direction now, four seasons into the program’s existence without a winning record. Harry was the head coach at Clearfield High for two seasons (2022-23).

St. Joseph wave off three seniors, including leading rusher Ryan Castaneda (1,240 yards), this season. The Jayhawks first introduced football in 2023.

Alexis King named UHSAA Coach of the Month

Ogden High girls soccer repeated as the 3A state champion last month, and the awards are still coming in.

On Tuesday, the UHSAA recognized Alexis King, the third-year coach of the Tigers, as its UHSAA October Coach of the Month.

In three seasons, King has either competed for or won a state title with Ogden, delivering state title game appearances in three consecutive seasons since 2024, when King first stepped into the head coaching role in place of Ryan Robinson.

Ogden, moving down from 4A to 3A in 2021, has made eight consecutive state title games dating back to 2018.

Skousen confirmed as Davis record holder

Harrison Skousen is officially in the school’s cross country record books at Davis High, the school shared publicly on Tuesday.

Skousen beat the state championship course record at Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City by 3 seconds with his fourth-place individual finish last week. Skousen, with a final time of 15:18.70, finished roughly 10 seconds behind 6A medalist Trevin Lounsburry (Herriman) and was the top finish among Region 1 state qualifiers.

Skousen is a fourth-year varsity runner and team captain of the Darts.
