Raptors pitching struggles in 12-7 loss to Vibes on Friday

By Brett Hein - Standard-Examiner | Aug 12, 2022

Matt Warkentin homered for the third time in as many starts since joining the Raptors, but Ogden pitching struggled in the middle innings and the visiting Rocky Mountain Vibes claimed a 12-7 win Friday night in front of a crowd of 5,138 at Lindquist Field, the second straight night the Raptors topped more than 5,000 fans.

Ogden led 3-0 through three innings, with scores including a Josh Broughton two-run single in the second inning. Starting pitcher Polo Portela did not allow a Vibes hit through three innings.

That changed in the fourth when RMV totaled four hits and scored five runs on the strength of a Joe Encarnacion three-run homer to give the visitors a 5-3 lead.

Broughton was a one-man offense in the bottom of the fourth, getting on base with a walk, stealing second and taking third on a throwing error during the play, and scoring on a wild pitch to make it 5-4.

It wasn’t nearly enough. LJ Diaz took the mound for Ogden in the fifth and gave up two hits and issued two walks without recording an out, leading to a four-run inning stemmed by third baseman Gunnar Buhner throwing out a runner at the plate.

Warkentin’s homer came in the eighth inning, a two-run shot that made it 11-7.

Buhner, Freddy Achecar and Pat Adams each totaled two hits and one double for Ogden.

Rocky Mountain rapped 13 singles to add to Encarnacion’s home run.

The two teams finish the series at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
