Raptors rally, leave tying run on third base in 5-4 loss at Vibes

By Brett Hein - Standard-Examiner | Aug 22, 2023

The Ogden Raptors well out-hit the Rocky Mountain Vibes to open their six-game series Tuesday night in Colorado Springs but went scoreless throughout.

The Raptors finally broke through late, then got the potential game-tying run to third base but the Vibes held on for a 5-4 win and continue to pace the Pioneer League’s South Divison in the second half.

The Vibes (39-39, 19-12) put up four runs against new Ogden (43-36, 12-19) pitcher Jackson Miller, capped with a two-run Dusty Stroup single in the fourth for a 4-0 lead. Miller gave up just four hits but walked four batters.

RMV would only get two more hits the rest of the way but it was a wild pitch from another new Ogden thrower, Dillon Champagne, that ultimately plated the winning run in the sixth inning.

The Raptors finally got it going in the seventh. Rafael Narea singled home Logan Williams and Juan Teixeira found the plate on the same play when Riley Ottesen got hung up in a pickle.

Cam Phelts then doubled in Narea, and Phelts scored when Josh Broughton hit a single. Ogden totaled 11 hits to RMV’s six.

It was Broughton, 3 for 4 to that point, who had the last crack at tying the game in the ninth. Coleton Horner led off with a base hit, took second on a Narea groundout and when to third when Phelts grounded out. Broughton grounded out to shortstop to end the game.

Blaine Traxel got the win for the Vibes, going scoreless through six before giving up three of the four runs in the seventh.

The series continues Wednesday through Sunday.
