Always Be Closing is the well-known phrase from Alec Baldwin in a tense (and profane) scene about sales from the 1992 film “Glengarry Glen Ross.” In college basketball terms, though, that’s better phrased as Always Be ‘Crootin.

Recruiting never stops and, needing new players possibly numbering in the double digits this offseason, Weber State men’s basketball has made that happen this week. New head coach Kaleb Canales got his third commitment in as many days on Tuesday when UNLV wing Mason Abittan announced his transfer to Weber State.

Abittan is a 6-foot-6 guard who WSU recruited last year. The Las Vegas native ultimately chose UNLV over Nevada, Colorado State and Weber. Abittan redshirted the 2025-26 season and has four seasons of eligibility remaining.

His commitment continues a trend in Canales’ early additions. Abittan joins New Mexico transfer Sir Marius Jones (four years left) and Rice transfer Aaron Powell (three years left) as former 20-points-per-game high school scorers headed to Weber State after redshirts at their original college destinations.

Those three players are set to join three current returners in Declan Cutler, ArDarius Grayson and Bourgeois Tshilobo. The Wildcats are currently trending very young (Cutler is a junior, the other five are sophomores or freshmen) but do have anywhere from 6-9 more players to add.

Before the coaching change, WSU signed three freshmen guards who would be set to join the team this year in Tiger Cuff (American Fork, Utah), Hunter Hansen (Plain City, Utah) and Kaleb Jackson (DeSoto, Texas). While the statuses of Hansen and Jackson are unknown, Cuff announced he’s headed to Hawaii when he returns home from missionary service. His older brother, Tanner, will be a senior at Hawaii next season.

The transfer portal remains open through April 21; players do not need to sign with their new school in that time, but simply have their name entered into the portal database to be eligible next season.

Starting at $4.32/week.
