The Jeep Wrangler has long been an icon in the world of off-road vehicles, embodying the spirit of adventure and rugged exploration. The 2024 Jeep Wrangler Sport 4xe takes this legacy to new heights, combining the iconic design with advanced hybrid technology — and adding the unique diversion of a plug-in all-electric drive, albeit for some 27 miles per charge.

Exterior design

The 2024 Wrangler 4xe retains its timeless, boxy silhouette, paying homage to its roots while incorporating modern design elements. The bold front grille, round headlights and high wheel arches are loaded with Jeep DNA. The four removable doors and roof panels give the freedom to embrace the open-air experience, reinforcing the Wrangler’s commitment to adventure.

The 4xe variant comes with subtle blue accents, indicating its plug-in hybrid nature. The charging port, discreetly placed on the front fender, adds a touch of sophistication to the exterior. The Wrangler 4xe stands out as a rugged yet environmentally conscious off-road companion.

During the part our weeklong adventure when we were only motoring Utah County, we could pretty much do it all on the 27-mile charge, and with a Level 2 charger in the garage it would charge to full in just over two hours.

Interior comfort and technology

Stepping inside the 4xe, we found a blend of rugged functionality and modern comfort. The durable materials are complemented by refined finishes that created an interior we found both robust and inviting. The seats provided excellent support during off-road excursions and long highway drives alike.

The 12.3-inch Uconnect touch screen infotainment system, which is new to Wrangler this year, was very intuitive, offering seamless and wireless connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The hybrid-specific features, such as electric range monitoring and charging status, were easily accessible. The climate control system ensured a comfortable cabin, regardless of the external conditions.

Hybrid powertrain

Of course, the highlight of the Wrangler Sport 4xe is its plug-in hybrid powertrain. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is paired with an electric motor, powered by a 17-kilowatt-hour battery pack. This setup not only enhances fuel efficiency but also provides an impressive electric-only driving range.

The hybrid system did not in any way compromise the Wrangler’s off-road capabilities. The eTorque technology ensured smooth low-end torque, crucial for conquering challenging terrains. The Selec-Trac four-wheel-drive system offers multiple modes, adapting to different driving conditions effortlessly.

On-road performance

Setting off from Springville on a trip to Utah’s Dixie had the 4xe’s hybrid capabilities shining. The electric-only mode is perfect for navigating the quiet streets in town, and the regenerative braking system contributed to energy recuperation, further improving efficiency.

The transition from electric to hybrid mode was seamless, and the turbocharged engine kicked in with a punch when more power was needed. On the highway, the Wrangler 4xe maintains a stable and comfortable ride, with the hybrid system subtly enhancing acceleration.

Off-road prowess

We were able to test the Wrangler on a trip to Touquerville Falls in Southern Utah that was both an ambitious and challenging drive for even the best 4×4 on the market, with the Wrangler handling everything from steep climbs, slick rock obstacles and mud with ease!

Engaging the 4WD Low mode, we navigated steep inclines and descents with confidence. The electric motor’s instant torque delivery proved invaluable in tricky situations, providing the necessary power precisely when needed. The Wrangler’s legendary approach and departure angles were maintained, ensuring we could tackle even the most challenging obstacles.

Charging experience

With charging infrastructure becoming more accessible, the Wrangler Sport 4xe offers flexibility for hybrid drivers. Utilizing the included Level 1 charger during our trip allowed us to recharge the battery conveniently overnight, ensuring we started each day with a full electric range.

The charging port’s location on the front fender was practical, providing easy access without compromising the vehicle’s rugged appearance. The Wrangler Sport 4xe’s electric-only range proved sufficient for most daily commutes, making it an excellent choice for eco-conscious drivers.

Conclusion

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler Sport 4xe successfully marries the iconic Jeep DNA with cutting-edge hybrid technology. Its rugged exterior, comfortable interior and impressive off-road capabilities make it a standout choice for adventure seekers. The hybrid powertrain enhances efficiency without sacrificing the off-road prowess that defines the Wrangler.

Our four-day journey through the diverse landscapes of Utah showcased the Wrangler Sport 4xe’s ability to seamlessly transition between electric and hybrid modes. Whether cruising through town, tackling challenging off-road trails or embarking on a scenic road trip, the Wrangler Sport 4xe proves itself as a versatile and capable companion for the modern adventurer.
