Yes to art in schools

(UNEDITED) It is was a great pleasure to read Brett Archuleta's op-ed "Art Should We Required." His youthful enthusiasm is inspiring.

As a life long artist, who grew up in the Ogden area, it is of course important to me to require art in the public schools. It also should be important to educators, parents and politicians. Whether the student is planning a career in the arts or not, studies have shown that classes in visual art, music and literature increase skills in mathematics, communication, critical thinking and problem solving.

The arts are not fluff. They are integral to creating a fully functional person.
