Girls basketball: Region 5 road teams find right mix

ROY -- Faced with an opportunity to move up the Region 5 standings, the Roy and Box Elder girls basketball teams didn't get the job done at home.

Region 5-leading Bonneville went on the road and used a strong defense to clinch the league title with a 50-39 win over Mountain Crest.

The Lakers (17-3, 9-0) led at every stop, holding the Mustangs' Karlee Kartchner to just five points. Region 5 teams have one game to play on Tuesday.

Utes battle back, but drop fifth straight contest

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Carrick Felix scored 15 points, including a dunk with 47 seconds to play and a pair of critical free throws with 11.7 seconds remaining, and Arizona State held off Utah 57-52 on Thursday night, sending the Utes to their fifth straight loss and 11th in 12 games.

Their lone victory in that span was a 64-43 rout of Arizona State in Salt Lake City on Jan. 21. Trent Lockett had 12 points in his first game back after missing six games with a sprained right ankle. The Sun Devils had gone 1-5 in Lockett's absence.

Senior forward Brianne Ryan knocked down 33 points, leading Eastern Washington to a 78-45 victory over the Weber State women's basketball team at Reese Court.

Ryan, who had 32 points in the first meeting between the teams in Ogden in January, is the Big Sky's leading scorer this season, averaging more than 19 points per game.

Aggies get back on track with some home cookining

LOGAN -- They are just days removed from the disappointing news that the career of star big man Brady Jardine is finished due to a foot surgery from an injury he sustained more than two months ago.

Starting center Morgan Grim was hindered the entire game due to that nagging foot injury that has restricted him all season.

With Oklahoma State assistant coach Bill Annan in attendance, Cowgirls signee Brittney Martin splashed in a season-high 31 points on 13-of-22 shooting Thursday and state 5-A runner-up Syracuse High clinched no less than a tie for its fourth consecutive league title with a 62-50 victory over the Warriors.

Bees, Falcons take home region wrestling crowns

SMITHFIELD -- As expected, the Bees and Mustangs battled for Region 5 wrestling supremacy.

And as expected, it was a nail-biter.

And perhaps as expected, the Box Elder squad had just enough extra in the tank to rise to the top followed two days of wrestling at Sky View High School.

Another happy homecoming for Wildcats

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- There's something about playing Northern Arizona that brings out the best in Weber State's Arizonans.

Wildcats set to begin 2012 softball campaign

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The days are cold and snow still lines the mountains of the Wasatch Front, but for the Weber State University softball team, things are starting to heat up.

The Wildcats kick off their third season of competition this afternoon at Eller Media Stadium when they take on Kent State at 2:30 p.m.

"We're excited to play," Weber State coach Tina Johnson said. "We haven't played on dirt or real grass, so it'll be fun to play on a softball field again."

Carroll at practice with Jazz

SALT LAKE CITY -- Waived by the Denver Nuggets on Saturday, forward DeMarre Carroll didn't think he'd have to wait long before another team picked him up.

He was right.

The Utah Jazz on Wednesday agreed to terms with the former first-round draft pick, making him the 14th player on their roster.

Ask Babe: Valuing Ben Hogan golf reprint, Babe Ruth ball

Dear Babe: I have a boxed edition of Ben Hogan's "Five Lessons, The Modern Fundamentals of Golf." It is from 1957. -- Ron Erickson, Beaumont, Calif.

Dear Ron: Da Babe was scratching his head, trying to find a "boxed edition" of this Hogan's book, which apparently is a reprint of five lessons that first appeared in Sports Illustrated.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and that was the case this time around. Once Da Babe saw a photo of what you had, the clouds parted and the mystery was solved.

Column: Capello gives England excuse to fail again

Their colonial history notwithstanding, the English often like to think of themselves as being good at doing the right thing.

In deciding that John Terry should no longer captain the national team while accused of a racially aggravated crime, the English Football Association did the right thing.

Fabio Capello was either incapable or unwilling to accept that, and so said "ciao!" to his $9 million-a-year job as England coach. In doing so, the Italian demonstrated how little he learned about the English psyche in four years in charge of the Three Lions.
