Mayor: Ogden police raid of wrong house being investigated

Editor,

Recently, an unfortunate incident occurred that caused an Ogden family regrettable stress and discomfort. Ogden police officers, serving a no-bail felony arrest warrant late at night, knocked on the door of what was believed to be the home of a close-relative, and likely location, of the warrant suspect. Unknown to the officers, a new family had moved into the residence several months prior that had no relation to the warrant suspect. When the father of that family answered the late-night knock at the door, he did so while holding a baseball bat and assuming a striking posture, which caused the officers to draw their weapons, disarm the father and briefly take him into custody while his identity was established. On behalf of Ogden City, I offer a sincere apology to the Hill family for the misfortunate and disturbing event they experienced.

We are relieved that this dangerous misunderstanding did not escalate into a tragic outcome. And, we intend to reevaluate police policies, practices, and training to ensure we are using best police practices for the safety of our citizens and our officers.

To this end, I have asked that an investigation and review be conducted by an assistant police chief that will focus not only on whether current policies were followed in this case, but also whether our current policies are adequate to meet our dual goals of effective police work and enhanced safety for our citizens and officers. I am especially interested in an analysis of whether this type of contact should be made at such a late hour, and under what circumstances. The assistant chief’s review will survey the policies of other police departments to make sure we are using best police practices in this and related areas. We may use other outside resources to help us analyze and resolve these issues. Effective police practices are constantly evolving and improving nationwide. We want to make sure Ogden City is on the cutting edge of that evolution.

During my first year in office, I have been continually impressed with the professionalism and diligence of Ogden City police officers--who have had a major impact on bringing down crime in our streets and neighborhoods. I appreciate their service and dedication to our community. I consider it my duty to them, and to our citizens, to make sure that best police practices and policies are in place to promote the safety of all.

Mike Caldwell
