New Ogden City Council members take the oath of office

OGDEN -- A planning session is coming soon for the Ogden City Council to discuss the goals and ideas of council members, as new members were inaugurated Monday afternoon.

Councilwoman Caitlin Gochnour, who was elected chairwoman at Monday's meeting, said she has plenty of goals for Ogden city this coming year but didn't want to divulge details.

"I've got a whole list," she said. "I have a whole list of things, as I'm sure the other council members do. We'll have a planning session coming shortly and prioritize, and go from there."

Susie Van Hooser, who was sworn in as a councilwoman Monday, was elected vice chairwoman. Neil Garner and Bart Blair also were sworn in as council members at the meeting.

Outgoing members were given an opportunity to make final remarks before new members were sworn in.

Jesse Garcia, who served 16 years on the city council, thanked everyone for their support and said he would remain involved in city doings.

"I may not be here," he said pointing from his chair, then to the audience. "But I will be there. I'm sure the new council will do very well."

Outgoing members Dorrene Jeske and Blain Johnson each stressed the importance of the council working efficiently with the administration.

"I'd like to see a more cooperative environment so we can enjoy the opportunities we have," Jeske said.

Johnson said his advice for incoming members is to put the people of Ogden first.

"Try to do what's best for Ogden City, not just personal interest," he said.

Gochnour said one goal she will have as chairwoman is to have the city council and administration work together better. She said the council members are aware of the tumultuous relationship between the administration and the council and are working to fix it.

"You know, I think we are all so aware that that's an issue, that we are going make a real effort (to work together with the administration)," she said.
