OGDEN — In what has become a recent trend in the Ogden area, an apartment building that was still under construction caught fire Friday night, prompting a response from multiple agencies.

According to Ogden City Fire Chief Mike Slater, fire crews were dispatched to the 100 block of 18th Street just before midnight amid reports of a fire at the three-story apartment building-in-progress located at the site. Upon arrival, crews “surrounded the structure with fire engines and went defensive on the fire,” per Slater, who added that firefighters protected exposures as the building burned.

Slater described the building as a “complete loss” during a press conference on Saturday morning, noting that there was approximately $3 million in damages to the structure alone.

Crews remained on the scene throughout the night and into the morning. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire. Slater said firefighters were rotated to ensure they remained hydrated and to prevent exhaustion.

An investigation of the incident and its cause is ongoing and is being assisted by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Slater indicated that the investigation would continue for at least the next several days.

A truck that was located on the east side of the property was damaged due to the fire; however, damage to neighboring properties continued to be assessed. An Ogden Fire news release stated that some timber and brush caught fire due to the heat and casts from the apartment structure. Meanwhile, a grass fire that ignited on the 700 West block of 17th Street is also under investigation, per the release, as it may have been sparked by embers from the construction site.

Slater noted that additional details could be provided to the public as early as Monday but cautioned that investigators would first be given time to complete preliminary work on-site. He also advised the public to avoid the area and thanked the responding agencies for their efforts.

“We appreciate the cooperation from local law enforcement — the police department — and the neighboring fire jurisdictions for their support and helping to protect our city last night,” Slater told reporters. “I’m extremely proud and grateful for the work that the men and women of Ogden Fire and the joining agencies put in to help extinguish this fire and keep our community safe.”

In total, 35 firefighters from the Ogden City Fire Department, Riverdale Fire Department, Weber Fire District, Washington Terrace Fire and North View Fire District responded to the incident, according to the release.

A five-story apartment complex under construction at 255 22nd Street was destroyed by fire in January. In-progress apartment buildings on the 300 block of 28th Street and at 3378 Washington Boulevard were also razed in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

Starting at $4.32/week.
