CENTERVILLE — Officials have identified the man who was killed in a police shooting Tuesday.
Centerville Police Department says 32-year-old Cody Ray McCray, of West Bountiful, was shot by police Tuesday, July 4, after a pursuit on Parrish Lane and Legacy Parkway.
Chief Paul Child said McCray had allegedly stolen a car overnight and was spotted several times by officers throughout Davis County. Initially officers chased the stolen vehicle, but after several terminated pursuits, Child said police began just monitoring McCray and noting his location.
Someone who knew the 32-year-old had earlier reported to emergency dispatch that he was suicidal, Child said. So when McCray began to drive eastbound on Parrish Lane, close to Centerville and West Bountiful’s Fourth of July parade areas, officers grew concerned.
“As law enforcement agencies for Centerville and West Bountiful, we were extremely concerned about this individual getting into our crowds,” Child said. “Every effort was made to keep him from getting into those crowds.”
Police were able to turn McCray around and away from the parade areas. Officers then attempted to spike the car’s tires while the man was driving on westbound Parrish Lane, but were unsuccessful, Child said.
McCray then turned onto northbound Legacy Parkway where officers then successfully spike the car’s tires. McCray, however, kept driving on shredded tires, Child said, before eventually turning around to drive southbound in northbound lanes.
Child said he then drove head on into a police car before another police car was able to ram the stolen vehicle, hitting it into the median of the road and making it incapable of driving. A grass fire then caught in the median, he said.
A UHP trooper was involved in the police shooting, but Child did not have any further details on what happened. It is unknown at this time how many shots were fired or if McCray had a weapon.
The incident is under investigation. No officers were injured in the incident, Child said.
Legacy Parkway was closed in all directions for several hours from Parrish Lane in Centerville to Glover Lane in Farmington due to the incident. Both directions of the roadway opened at approximately 4:45 p.m.
