State seeks money from federal agency

SALT LAKE CITY -- The state is asking President Barack Obama to declare a presidential disaster for Utah as a result of the Dec. 1 windstorm and cleanup in Davis County.

A Federal Emergency Management Agency team recently completed a damage estimate in Davis County, Commissioner D. Lance Davenport of the Department of Public Safety said in a news release. FEMA identified about $4.1 million in damage to public infrastructure, including municipal power systems, roads and buildings, as well as costs related to debris removal and emergency protective measures.

ROY -- A woman's cautious, inquisitive nature saved her from being a scam victim Wednesday, because she knows you can't get a quarter-million-dollar payoff from a $100 investment.

The 82-year-old woman, who asked to not be identified in this story so she isn't targeted by other scammers, wants other people to know about the scam routine so they don't let their financial desperation or greed and an authentic-sounding offer make them a victim.

Strike force arrests seven on drug charges

OGDEN -- The Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force arrested seven men on drug charges over the weekend and confiscated a quantity of narcotics, a spokesman said Monday.

Brigham City Holiday Home Show to benefit club, students

BRIGHAM CITY -- A variety of homes will be included in the annual Holiday Home Show hosted by Civic Improvement Club from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Featured will be two Brigham City pioneer homes, the 1860s Peter Forsgren home owned and restored by Karen and Scott Ericson at 59 S. 100 East, and the 1860s William Watkins home owned and restored by LeeAnn and Brent Jensen, 74 N. 100 East.

Red Cross seeking hero nominations

OGDEN -- Heroes may be all around us: family members, friends, coworkers, or complete strangers.

The Utah Region of the American Red Cross will honor local heroes who have acted bravely in a time of immediate need, or who simply display acts of heroism in day to day life. Recognition will take place during events in Salt Lake, Provo, Ogden, and St. George during March 2012, so nominations are needed now.

Weber County Republican Women to hear Rep. Ivory

OGDEN — The December meeting of the Weber County Republican Women will be held at noon Dec. 5 at Jeremiah’s Restaurant, 1207 W. 12th St.

The speaker for the luncheon will be Rep. Ken Ivory, R-West Jordan, who will discuss “The Line Between National, State and Local Governments.”

Council to canvass results on Tuesday

PLEASANT VIEW — The city council will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday to canvass results from the Nov. 8 general election. Unofficial results had Jerold Burns, Mel Marker and Toby Mileski winning seats, with incumbent Todd Walker beaten in his attempt at re-election.

When setting clocks, also check detectors

OGDEN -- Along with changing clocks tonight, the Ogden Fire Department reminds people to change the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

In a news release, the department recommends having a smoke and carbon monoxide detector outside each sleeping area with at least one smoke detector on each level of the home. Smoke detectors older than 10 years should be replaced with a new one; the same for carbon monoxide detectors more than seven years old.

Rotary Club asks Herbert to speak

Ogden -- Gov. Gary Herbert will speak to a luncheon meeting of the Rotary Club of Ogden at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Marriott Ogden Hotel.

New 'Occupy' group to rally in Ogden

OGDEN -- Utah's newest "Occupy" group will hold a rally at 10 a.m. Saturday at City Hall Park on 25th Street and Washington Boulevard.

The rally will include an information table, speakers, sign-making and stories of people's struggles with unemployment, loss of retirement savings, foreclosure and health issues.

Candle chain opens Newgate Mall store

OGDEN -- The national chain store Yankee Candle has opened a store in the Newgate Mall, the third of four stores it plans this year for Utah.

Manager Laura Fleck said the store opened at the first of October across from the entrance to Dillard's. The store sells scented candles and accessories. The corporate-owned stores will be open year-round and employ up to 10 part-time workers and two full-timers in Ogden, Fleck said.

Public can meet city council candidates

OGDEN -- The Women's Legislative Council of Weber County will hold a Meet the Candidates Night at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the South Ogden Senior Center, 580 39th St.

Candidates for the city council will introduce themselves and address concerns and questions from the audience. Expected to attend are candidates for At large Seat C Rick Safsten, Steve Thompson and Amy Wicks, and South Ogden City Council candidates Michael Jacobazzi, Sallee Orr and Kelly Zaugg.
