ATF Offers $5,000 Reward in Gun Store Burglary

RAWLINS, Wyo. -- Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Denver Field Division Special Agent in Charge Marvin G. Richardson announced today a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the burglary of The Man Cave, a pawn shop and federally licensed firearms (FFL) dealer, located at 109 4th Street, Rawlins, Cheyenne, WY.

Utah Gov. to host travel promotion event in Canada

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah Office of Tourism will promote the state's national parks, ski resorts, and other attractions at a gathering for travel trade representatives in Calgary during Gov. Gary R. Herbert's trade mission to Alberta, Canada.

"Canada is Utah's largest international tourism market and we're looking forward to sharing what's new in the industry with travel trade industry leaders in Alberta as we work to increase visitation from that country," said Herbert.

Some predict recession for Mountain West economy in 2012

DENVER - For the 24th straight month, the overall index for the Mountain States region, a leading economic indicator for the three-state area of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming, advanced above growth neutral 50.0. The national index has risen above growth neutral for 26 consecutive months (www.ism.ws) but has remained lower than the regional reading. The gap between the results of the two surveys has widened, primarily as a result of Mountain States' growth tied to the region's large energy sector, exports and agriculture.

U of U to open cosmic ray visitor center

DELTA -- The University of Utah's Department of Physics and Astronomy will hold an open house at 1 p.m. MDT Wednesday, Oct. 5 at the new Millard County Cosmic Ray Visitor Center in Delta.

The center - which normally will be open 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on weekdays - holds displays about the history of cosmic ray research in Utah and about the Telescope Array cosmic ray observatory, which is spread across the desert west of Delta. The center also includes a display about the nearby Topaz internment camp, where U.S.

Utah National Forests conducting visitor use studies

OGDEN - Starting Oct. 1, visitors to the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache and Ashley national forests may see and be contacted by Forest Service employees and contractors surveying forest visitor use.

Utah accident reports to be available online

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah Department of Public Safety has announced the launch of the new Accident Reports system that allows citizens to easily retrieve their automobile accident report online at http://crashreport.utah.gov.

Ogden dietary supplement company completes FDA inspection

OGDEN -- Mineral Resources International, Inc., a dietary supplement manufacturer of ionic minerals from Utah's Great Salt Lake, announced that it has completed its successful first cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practices) inspection by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The FDA found no deficiencies or areas where corrective action notices.

MRI's manufacturing facility, based in Ogden, was the subject of a random, weeklong, on-site audit Aug. 31 to Sept. 8, to ensure the company's compliance with cGMPs.

Feds charge 91 for $295M in false Medicare billings

WASHINGTON -- Attorney General Eric Holder and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced today that a nationwide takedown by Medicare Fraud Strike Force operations in eight cities has resulted in charges against 91 defendants, including doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals, for their alleged participation in Medicare fraud schemes involving approximately $295 million in false billing.

California condors to be released in Arizona

BOISE - Three California condors will be released to the wild in the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument in northern Arizona at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24. The public is welcome to observe the release from a viewing area where spotting scopes will be set up and experts will be available to answer questions.

80 Utah companies to receive safety awards

SALT LAKE CITY - Over 80 Utah organizations will be receiving safety awards for safety excellence in the workplace. The Utah Safety Council's Awards Program will be held in conjunction with the Utah Safety Council Annual Meeting on Aug. 26 at the Sheraton Salt Lake City Hotel, 150 West 500 South, Salt Lake City, Utah. This is the largest safety recognition program in the state to honor organizations for safety excellence.

U of U research funding down about 9%

SALT LAKE CITY  - The University of Utah collected almost $411 million in research grants and related funding during the recently ended fiscal year 2011. The total is down 8.8 percent from the previous fiscal year, entirely due to an expected sharp drop in federal economic stimulus money.

UofU study shows how rats diet to avoid poison

SALT LAKE CITY - Life is tough for woodrats in deserts of the U.S. Southwest. There are few plants for food, and those plants produce poison to deter rodents, insects and other animals. A new University of Utah study shows how certain woodrats put themselves on a diet to avoid poisoning: They sample a smorgasbord of toxic plants, eat smaller meals, increase time between meals and drink more water if it is available.

Cedar City resident is state champion truck driver

SALT LAKE CITY -- Jeff Payne, of Cedar City, was named the best professional truck driver in Utah after winning the twin trailers competition and receiving the highest overall score in the nine competing categories at the 2011 Utah Truck Driving Championships. The annual event is sponsored by Utah Trucking Association.

Payne, who drives for Reddaway, now qualifies to compete in the American Trucking Associations' National Truck Driving Championships Aug. 9-13, 2011 in Orlando, Fla. - also known as the "Super Bowl of Safety." The winners from each of the eight other categories are also eligible to compete in the national championship.
