WEST VALLEY CITY -- Officials are trying to identify a body found in a West Valley City canal by a group of juveniles walking to school.

West Valley City Police Sgt. Mike Powell says the minors were walking to school with an adult about 7 a.m. Friday when they spotted what looked like a body in a canal near Hunter High School.

Powell says police dispatched a dive team, which found a man's body partially underwater and caught on some debris.

Police say the man appeared to be in his late 30s to early 40s and was wearing a white, long-sleeved button-up shirt with blue jeans and black shoes.

He hadn't been identified by midday Friday.

Powell says it appears the man had been dead for less than 24 hours when he was discovered.
