Gun control issue mostly about freedom

Editor,

Generally, I have accepted the fact that John Q. Public is just not very informed. However, the letter of March 10, “NRA’s actions unnecessary, citing that article 18 of the United States Code trumps the 2nd Amendment of The Constitution of the United States, left me no choice but to respond.

The writer needs to realize that the entire gun control issue is not about guns, It is about freedom! It is this same freedom that lets him speak in this forum without restriction. It also allowed him to vote last November, and to go to church where he chose to last Sunday. There is no middle ground with these freedoms. If you endorse one, you endorse all.

Secondarily, the writer is right about one thing. No one should go against the government, providing that the government has not violated any one person’s rights protected by the Constitution of the United States.

Just as important, the writer needs to realize that this freedom came from hundreds of thousands of people dying for preservation of his rights. After that time in history, many people have come to this country to pursue these same freedoms and to stand for its principles and rights. Many of them have since died protecting these rights.

More recently, many people have migrated to this country to partake of all of it’s benefits, but they want to impose their misguided beliefs in changing this country’s principles. These people, and this letter writer should take a long, hard look in the mirror, and ask themselves, “Am I willing to die for the principles and rights of this country?” I suspect they will answer no, in which case they should seriously consider defecting to another country. There are many who have governments that won’t allow them the right to vote, worship, speak, or for damn sure, own a gun!
