Man in standoff out of hospital, in jail

OGDEN -- Three and a half weeks after his standoff with Ogden police, Jason Valdez, 36, has been booked into Weber County Jail.

Valdez had been recovering in McKay-Dee Hospital since June 19, when the standoff ended with him shooting himself in the chest as police barged into the Western Colony Inn motel room. He had barricaded himself in there with a hostage for 16 hours after officers tried to serve him a drug-related warrant.

On Wednesday, he was booked on two counts of attempted aggravated murder, which are first-degree felonies, for shooting his handgun at two SWAT officers as they charged into the motel room. He was also booked for aggravated kidnapping, a first-degree felony, and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, a second-degree felony.

If convicted on all counts, he could face up to three life sentences in prison.
