WASHINGTON TERRACE -- A 23-year-old North Ogden man faces two felony charges after being accused of injecting a near-lethal dose of heroin into a female friend's IV tube at a hospital.
An intensive care supervisor at Ogden Regional Medical Center told deputies on Aug. 3 that Ryan Tyler Knighton was visiting the woman when he injected her with the drug as she lay in her hospital bed.
Knighton has been charged with a felony count of aggravated assault and another of distribution of a controlled substance. He has been summoned to appear in 2nd District Court in Ogden on Dec. 8.
The woman had been admitted into the hospital's intensive care unit after she accidentally injected heroin into an artery in her arm instead of a vein, according to the police report of the incident.
That mistake almost cost the woman her hand, but officials say she still asked Knighton to bring another dose to the hospital and told him to administer it intravenously.
The woman told deputies he injected it into her IV with a syringe when hospital staff wasn't looking.
According to the report, the drug caused the woman to stop breathing and Knighton fled the hospital. The woman was reportedly not cooperative in helping police track down Knighton.
Police tried to locate Knighton at his listed North Ogden address, but he could not be found immediately following the incident, and his relatives told authorities they had not seen him for a few days.
Official charges were filed Nov. 10. Knighton received a summons to appear in court and to turn himself in to Weber County Jail, where he was booked and released.
