OGDEN — When he launched his first Jersey Mike’s location in Utah in 2016, franchisee Brett Lewis jumped at the notion of taking part in the company’s annual Month of Giving and Day of Giving initiatives.

“For us, it was a no-brainer,” Lewis said. “Being part of the community is huge.”

As part of Month of Giving each March, Jersey Mike’s locations across the country gather donations from customers to benefit a range of charitable groups. The initiative culminates with the Day of Giving on the last Wednesday of the month — this coming Wednesday this year — when 100% of proceeds earned at each sub sandwich location go to charity.

As the initiative has continued year by year, Lewis’ feelings about it have strengthened. Proceeds from Lewis’ Jersey Mike’s locations in Utah on Day of Giving will benefit Utah’s arm of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which provides “life-changing wishes” for kids with serious illnesses.

“That’s what gets us — the kids,” Lewis said.

He and his business partner T.C. Kreuger operate 12 Jersey Mike’s locations in Utah, including six between Layton and Logan, and seven more in Portland, Oregon, and Reno, Nevada. Last year, Month of Giving proceeds coming from those 19 Jersey Mike’s locations totaled $120,000, with $90,000 of that generated on Day of Giving, mostly in his Utah stores.

The Standard-Examiner plans to get in on the act, buying 100 sub sandwiches from Jersey Mike’s on Wednesday and donating the food to Lantern House for the clients the Ogden homeless shelter serves.

Publisher Jim Konig calls the newspaper’s effort a “double dip” — benefiting Make-A-Wish Utah through the sandwich purchase and benefiting Lantern House by the donation of the food. “We get to help the Utah community and the local community,” he said.

More generally, he lauded Jersey Mike’s effort, donating all proceeds garnered one day a year. “I think anytime a company gives 100%, it’s amazing,” he said.

He also invited the public and other businesses to join the Standard-Examiner in purchasing sandwiches next Wednesday.

The Jersey Mike’s Month of Giving effort last year earned more than $20 million nationwide for local charities, and company officials hope to top that record amount this year. Since the initiative started in 2011, it has collectively raised more than $67 million, according to Jersey Mike’s.

The Ogden Jersey Mike’s location is at 218 E. 12th St. Lewis and Krueger’s other Northern Utah locations are in Riverdale, Layton, Brigham City, Clinton and Logan.
