OGDEN — An annual event set for Saturday aims to make sure 2,000 kids have better Christmases than they might otherwise.

It also aims to bolster the self-sufficiency of the targeted families.

The Ogden-Weber Community Action Partnership, or OWCAP, holds its annual Community Christmas event on Saturday at Ben Lomond High School. Around 650 families, already selected, will take part, with parents and guardians picking out presents for the 2,000 or so kids they care for between them.

Codianne Nye, community support manager for OWCAP, an Ogden social service agency, said the families were picked by social service agencies that partner with OWCAP with the aim of making their holiday season a bit more merry. The heads of the families taking part are required to get life skills training ahead of time in areas like financial literacy and more in a bid to increase their self-sufficiency.

Donors have provided new toys, clothing, coats and more for distribution on Saturday and provided $6,000 on top of that to aid the effort. While parents are picking out presents on Saturday, the kids will take part in games and other fun activities.

Pre-registration is required to take part and the participating families have already been picked.

“Community Christmas helps to bring the magic of Christmas to children in our community who might not have the opportunity to receive it this year. Many families are feeling the impact of the economy this year and are turning to Community Christmas for help that they need at this time,” said Tami McBride, the volunteer event organizer.

The Ogden School District is a partner in the effort.
