Ogden Raptors pitcher Pablo Arevalo rears back to throw on May 28, 2023, at Lindquist Field in Ogden.

Ogden right-hander Pablo Arevalo was in control Sunday afternoon in Boise, and his arm led the Raptors to a series split with the Hawks to end the team’s first road trip of the season.

Arevalo threw a four-hit complete game in 111 pitches to lead Ogden to a 4-1 victory over Boise.

Arevalo’s prowess included a stretch in which he retired 12 straight Boise batters and held the Hawks hitless over 5 1/3 innings of baseball.

He finished having allowed one earned run on four hits, striking out four and walking three, in his victory. Arevalo also helped Ogden hitters overcome leaving 11 runners on base, including four in scoring position with one out or better in the sixth and ninth innings combined.

Boise’s lone run came in the first inning when Kole Kaler singled with one out, stole second and went to third on an Arevalo balk. Kaler scored on a sacrifice fly to put the home team up 1-0.

The Hawks’ best threat came in the third inning when Kenny Oyama and Kaler singled on consecutive at-bats, but Arevalo induced Raymond Gil into an inning-ending double play.

Arevalo kept Boise (8-4) from another hit until the ninth inning and retired the side in order in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings before walking Kaler with two outs in the eighth.

Alex Baeza led off the bottom of the ninth with a single. With two outs, Arevalo hit Tyler Jorgensen with a pitch, which brought the tying run to the plate, but Noah Marcelo flew out to left field to end the game.

Ogden (7-5) tied the game 1-1 in the fourth when catcher Landen Barns reached via error with two outs and scored on a single from infielder Rafael Narea.

Boise starter Brayden Spears appeared to be fully in the duel with Arevalo until the sixth when Spears hit Barns with a pitch, walked Logan Williams and then hit Narea to load the bases.

Spears gave way to Noah McBride, who threw two wild pitches and walked two more batters. But only Juan Teixeira could cash in with the bat, adding an RBI single to give the Raptors a 4-1 lead, before Tim Bouchard grounded into a double play to end the threat.

In the ninth, Ogden’s bats failed to get Arevalo some insurance, stranding Dakota Conners on third (he singled) and Teixeira on second (he doubled) with no outs.

Ogden returns home for a six-game series against Idaho Falls beginning Tuesday at Lindquist Field.
