OGDEN — Ogden’s Historic 25th Street’s colorful history is something many like to talk about and paranormal investigator Robin Westover is no different. She started doing research on Union Station’s history about 15 years ago and was fascinated by who had died there and all the things that went on in the old train station.

Her research soon expanded up 25th Street. “I found a lot of interesting stories and it seemed like a shame not to share them,” Westover said.

Thus, the Haunted Ogden Ghost Tours began.

Westover started going to several businesses asking if they had experienced paranormal activity and found out many had. The business owners were also interested in the history and how it coincides with the paranormal activity that goes on today.

She started doing the ghost tours about three years ago, around the fall, but 2016 is the first year she is offering them in the spring. There are a host of different tours for all tastes and interests.

The Ghost Hunt 101 tour, for instance, is more involved and occurs over a series of a few tours. Tourists will often set out different types of paraphernalia and see if the items move or change over a few weeks’ time. The first Ghost Hunt 101 was held on March 4 but the event will continue over the next few weeks and anyone can join the tour at any time.

PREVIEW

• WHAT: Haunted Ogden Ghost Tours

• WHEN: Various times Fridays and Saturdays, March-April

• ADMISSION: $30/Ghost Hunt 101; all other tours, $30/two peeople. Tickets at www.hauntedogden.com.

This tour starts in the basement of Making Scents at 290 Historic 25th St. “They have an active basement and we spend a lot of time there,” Westover said. Interestingly, the owner of Making Scents also has a business closer to Wall Avenue on 25th Street and there is no paranormal activity there, Westover said.

As she started doing the investigating, Westover, a Brigham City resident, also found that many of the bars had experienced some of the same paranormal activity as the businesses, so she added a bar crawl tour where tourists go to various bars, have a drink, and learn about the history of the locations. Westover said it is a fun and enjoyable night where they get into the “nitty gritty” history of the bars and some of the bizarre things that went on there during 25th Street’s more wild days.

Because of the interest of such a varied crowd, she also does a Family History Walking Tour and a Haunted History Walking Tour. Both are more basic tours where tourists walk 25th Street and talk about the history and happenings of ghosts on 25th Street and some of the historic buildings like Union Station, Helena Hotel, London’s Ice Cream Parlor and so on. There are even a few basement visits.

Often soft drinks are served or maybe an appetizer along the way. The family friendly tour leaves out a lot of the gruesome details of 25th Street’s history and focuses on the basic history side of things.

Westover said she tries to have tours that center around the different interesting historical things in the community like the driving of the golden spike at Promontory Summit in May or Pioneer Days in July.

“I spend a lot of time at the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Museum (in Ogden),” Westover said. “I find names and then I go look them up there and see where they come from and who they belong to,” she said. “It is so fascinating.”

All tours begin in front of Making Scents and start times vary. Discount coupons are available at the store and tickets can be purchased at www.hauntedogden.com.
