Kansas football coach Charlie Weis speaks to reporters Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, in Lawrence, Kan. Weis introduced three high-profile transfers--Dayne Crist, Jake Heaps and Justin McCay--on Monday, ushering in a new era of Jayhawk football. Crist and Heaps were both among the best QBs in the country coming out of high school, and McCay was one of the nation's most dynamic wide receivers.

Jayhawks under Weis all about second chances

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Former Notre Dame quarterback Dayne Crist sat behind a table flanked by former BYU quarterback Jake Heaps and ex-Oklahoma wide receiver Justin McCay. Over to the side sat Charlie Weis, the smile on his face stretching nearly ear to ear.

All of them are getting a second chance at Kansas.

Impact draft Duke's Wenger with top MLS pick; RSL adds trio

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Andrew Wenger looked a bit sheepish the moment he was asked what teams and players he followed growing up. He knew his reply wasn't all that daring.

"Well, Manchester United," he said. "And, of course, David Beckham."

Now, Wenger may have a chance to play against him.

The expansion Montreal Impact selected the Duke forward with the first overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft on Thursday, choosing the most complete player available in the two-round draft.

The Hermann Trophy winner as the top NCAA player, Wenger was the ACC defensive player of the year last season and offensive player of the year this season, finishing with 17 goals and eight assists.

BYU's Heaps heads to Kansas

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas coach Charlie Weis landed a pair of high-profile quarterbacks Thursday.

Former top recruit Dayne Crist announced on Twitter that he would join the Jayhawks for his senior season after a checkered career at Notre Dame, shortly before news broke that BYU quarterback Jake Heaps was also transferring to Kansas.

Crist will reunite with Weis, who recruited him to Notre Dame, and be eligible to play next season because he's already graduated from Notre Dame. Heaps will have to sit out under NCAA transfer rules but will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Officials at Kansas could not comment on the quarterbacks until they enroll.

Conference shuffling yields hoops winners, losers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- About a week ago, West Virginia coach Bob Huggins was singing the virtues of a Big East Conference that had already been poached of Pittsburgh and Syracuse.

"I mean let's be honest," Huggins said at the time, "if you have Georgetown, Villanova, St. John's, Connecticut, West Virginia, whoever -- Louisville, you know, whoever, it's still a very, very, very good basketball league."

Well, the conference realignment merry-go-round promptly sent West Virginia spinning off to the Big 12, and Huggins is now praising a conference that he's been involved with before, one that added West Virginia only because it lost Texas A&M and Missouri is headed out the door.

First Lady teams with MLB to support troops

ST. LOUIS -- Michelle Obama and Jill Biden put their baseball allegiances aside Wednesday and teamed up with Major League Baseball to support the military before Game 1 of the World Series.

Obama, whose husband is a proud White Sox fan, and Dr. Biden, a self-described "Philly girl," stopped by the VA Medical Center to visit with veterans and their families before heading to blustery Busch Stadium for the first pitch between the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers.

Patrick finishing IndyCar run with eye on NASCAR

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Danica Patrick is ready for one last hurrah in IndyCars before she turns her attention entirely to her blossoming stock car career.

The IndyCar icon has raced a partial Nationwide schedule the past two seasons during her much-publicized transition to NASCAR. Her final open-wheel race is the IndyCar World Championships on Oct. 16 in Las Vegas, and then it's on to her full-time ride with Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s JR Motorsports.

"I'm ready for change," Patrick said Friday at Kansas Speedway, where she was preparing for Saturday's Nationwide Series race.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Hope Solo is kicking off her cleats for some dancing shoes.

It's making her about as nervous as a World Cup final.

Joplin High School wide receiver Dayton Whitehead (5) celebrates his touchdown reception with Abe Hueller (46) during the first half of a high school football game against Hillcrest in Joplin, Mo., Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011. The tornado that swept through in May of 2011 took homes and businesses, friends and families as it killed more than 150 people and left billions of dollars in damage. There's comfort in routine and the Joplin High football team will give thousands of them a chance for another step toward normalcy on Saturday night when the Eagles play a home opener like none other around here. In tornado aftermath, football helps heal Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. — There’s a scar through the middle of Joplin, a mile wide and six miles long. All that’s left are a few twisted tree stumps, chunks of chewed up pavement and the tattered remains of homes and businesses.

Heat causing headaches for HS football coaches

GARDNER, Kan. -- High school football coaches are always eager for fall practice to start, and that rings especially true in small towns all across the Midwest, where every store closes up and every light is turned off except for those at the stadium on a Friday night.

Some coaches are even more anxious to get started this season.

New stadium, new name, new attitude for MLS in KC

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Davy Arnaud remembers gazing into the stands at Arrowhead Stadium on a crisp March day and nearly being able to count the number of fans.

The midfielder was playing for the Major League Soccer club in Kansas City against Costa Rican club Deportivo Saprissa. It was a quarterfinal of the CONCACAF Champions League, and Arnaud estimates there were about 400 people that day -- which means nearly 80,000 empty seats were staring right back at him.

Fighters lining up for defending champ Pacquiao

NEW YORK -- Manny Pacquiao never has trouble finding a fight. Anybody with a shred of credibility who can come close to making weight has been lining up for years to face the box-office sensation.

So when Pacquiao agreed to fight Juan Manuel Marquez in November, their third matchup in what already has been an epic series, everyone else started pairing up.

Golden perspectives: De La Hoya on troop visit

NEW YORK -- It's hardly rare that celebrities and athletes visit troops overseas.

Bob Hope became synonymous with USO tours some 60 years ago, and Bing Crosby toured bases in Europe during World War II. Marilyn Monroe visited Korea during the 1950s, NFL players went to Vietnam in the '60s, and Project Salute took dozens of entertainers to the Persian Gulf.

Less common is an athlete or celebrity volunteering to visit the most dangerous bases on the front line, then being so moved by the experience it becomes an annual trip.

UFC continues push to legalize MMA in NYC

NEW YORK -- The UFC is returning to New Jersey this weekend, which means officials for the mixed martial arts promotion have been spending most of their time in New York City.

Makes perfect sense when you think about it.
