SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The man who lost his job to Colin Kaepernick is among those most impressed by what Kaepernick has accomplished this season.

And it’s not Kaepernick’s foot speed or the zip on his passes that have been most striking, Alex Smith said Wednesday.

Local student shines at national Punt, Pass, Kick competition

For five years, Bear River High School freshman Bridger Beus has competed in the National Football League’s Punt, Pass and Kick competition.

Last Saturday, he lived out his dream in Atlanta as one-of-four finalists competing for the national title.

Former Bear River product named JUCO All-American

As the college football season winds down, the most successful squads are loading up on the hardware.

Snow College defensive end Jake Miller, a former Bear River High product, was among six players from the third-ranked Badgers team named recently to the All-America teams announced by the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Yulee RB Henry breaks national HS rushing record

YULEE, Fla. -- Derrick Henry has broken one of the most coveted and long-standing records in the history of high school football.

Henry broke Ken Hall’s career rushing record Friday night. Hall ran for 11,232 yards in four years (1950-53) at Sugar Land (Texas). The record had long been considered an unbreakable mark.

Titans put it all on the line in 5-A championship game

SYRACUSE — The posse just got a little bit stronger.

Down four starters for their Nov. 8 state 5-A semifinal showdown versus Region 4 co-champion Bingham, the undefeated Titans are back to nearly full strength for today’s 5-A championship game against once-beaten Jordan.

Prep football: Titans hope to end Region 1 dry spell

SYRACUSE — When the Syracuse Titans load the bus on Friday to prepare for the state 5-A football championship game at Utah’s Rice-Eccles Stadium, they’ll take the hopes of Region 1, which hasn’t claimed the top crown in eight years.

The Davis Darts won the title in 2004. Since then, powerful Region 1 has had a team in the top classification final four of the past five years without bringing the trophy home.

West roundup: SUU stuns NAU in 3rd overtime

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Southern Utah’s Cody Larsen sacked Northern Arizona’s Cary Grossart for a 15-yard loss on a fourth-and-3 play, keeping the Lumberjacks out of the end zone in the third overtime and preserving a 35-29 victory for the Thunderbirds on Saturday.

The loss dropped Northern Arizona (8-2, 6-1 Big Sky) into a tie for the conference lead with Eastern Washington and Montana State. Southern Utah (5-6, 4-4) also gave Eastern Washington its only conference setback.

The difference for Southern Utah in the third overtime proved to be Easton Pedersen’s 22-yard touchdown pass from Brad Sorensen.

With the game on the line, Syracuse High’s highly-touted defense lived up to its billing Thursday in the state 5-A semifinals at the University of Utah.
