Despite tough first year in office, Ogden mayor optimistic about jobs, housing

OGDEN — Mike Caldwell’s first year as mayor of Ogden was bookended by two high-profile tragedies involving the city and many of its community members.

A day after he assumed office on Jan. 3, 2012, Ogden police officer Jared Francom was shot and killed in the line of duty during a police narcotics raid.

Near the end of the first year, the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut claimed the life of six educators and 20 children, including 6-year-old Emilie Parker, born in Ogden to Robbie and Alissa Parker, both longtime residents of Ogden with deep roots in the city.

Ogden mayor bids farewell, hammers critics

OGDEN -- In his final address as mayor of Ogden, Matthew Godfrey stopped twice to collect himself. He spoke about how the pressures of public criticism had damaged the family name his father was proud of and how the death of his father four years ago affected him.

Godfrey, that jerk, did a lot of good as Ogden's mayor

Thursday I had coffee at Grounds for Coffee on 25th Street, then wandered past the shops, restaurants and businesses to Ron Inkley's Imaging Depot for a roll of film I had developed.

Read that paragraph again. Twelve years ago the walk I took was vastly different.

Sadie Clifford's coffee shop didn't exist. Ron Inkley's place was a run-down bus station. Almost none of the shops, stores and restaurants in between were there.

OVWSF, Amer Sports will host fundraiser

OGDEN -- The Ogden Valley Winter Sports Foundation and Amer Sports invite the community to attend Ogden's Winter Welcome event on Friday at 5:30 p.m., at the David Eccles Conference Center.

The event will also honor Mayor Matthew Godfrey for his 12 years of service and will provide a warm welcome for the incoming mayor.

This event will recognize the accomplishments of the outgoing mayor and the remarkable transformation of Ogden into a recognized center of outdoor sports and recreation.
