Harrison Boulevard wide enough for now

CLEARFIELD — The Wasatch Front Regional Council has made some changes to its 30-year regional transportation plan in the Top of Utah.

After receiving public comments from government officials and area residents, WFRC is no longer planning to widen Harrison Boulevard in Ogden from 20th Street to U.S. 89.

Now, the plan calls for only operational improvements on the road from 20th Street to Country Hills Drive in Ogden, and widening the road from four lanes to six from Country Hills Drive to U.S. 89.

The plan also calls for a widening of U.S. 89 from Harrison to Interstate 84.

At a Wednesday WFRC meeting in Clearfield, council planner Jory Johner said the Ogden City Council had approached WFRC with questions about what the U.S. 89 project would mean to traffic on Harrison Boulevard, but officials have decided the road will accommodate that traffic.

“We feel like the project is still warranted,” Johner said.

The plan also calls for a widening of Interstate 15 from the Box Elder County line to 2700 North in Pleasant View and from I-84 to the Davis County line.

WFRC also plans for some new construction in Davis County, extending Fairfield Road in Layton from State Road 193 to I-84 in South Weber, a move WFRC officials think will take some pressure off I-15.

The plan also calls for a widening of I-15 from the Weber County line to Hill Field Road in Layton, and the widening of U.S. 89 from I-84 to I-15 in Farmington.

WFRC’s regional transportation plan is the long-term blueprint for the Wasatch Front region’s transportation system.

Updated every four years, it plans 30 years into the future, identifying and analyzing transportation needs and creating a framework for project priorities.

The plan is the governing document for the Utah Transit Authority and the Utah Department of Transportation, which means any new capacity expansion projects from either of those two entities must first be adopted in the regional transportation plan.

The final plan will be adopted next month.
