Y. Marie Heiner
1. Name some of the qualifications you possess that make you the best choice to represent your city?
I served on the city council for one year, after which I served two terms, eight years, as the mayor. During that time, I was heavily involved in many programs and on several committees including Utah League of Cities and Towns, Utah Association of Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS), and a Youth Programs Coordinator with the Utah Rural Electric Association (UREA). By personally being involved in many of the activities and organizations playing a role in our community, I was able to learn about the various roles and responsibilities that are associated with managing the growth of a community and the accompanying challenges.
2. What political ideals and philosophies guide your decision-making processes?
My political ideals are guided by my moral ideals. Honesty, integrity, and fairness are vital in upholding these values. Therefore, in everything I do and every decision I make, I strive to hold to these principles. I work for what I know is right; consequently, my city can count on the decisions I make to be those that I believe will benefit our community as a whole. In short, my political ideals will always guide my decison-making processes because they are the ideals I consider very important in every day life.
3. What is the most important issue facing your city?
Each citizen has differing concerns at different stages in their lives and their involvement in the community. Because these concerns are important to each citizen individually, they should also be vitally important to city and community leaders. Therefore, it is difficult to identify a specific issue as being the most important because every issue is critically important to someone. Community leadership has the responsibility of considering these issues as they relate to the general health, safety, beauty, growth, and integration of the community and its members.
4. Name some qualities that you possess that make you a good team worker and able to bring consensus among city leaders?
In order to reach the best solution in a given situation, I have found that it is imperative that I listen to all sides of an issue and bring those comments into consideration as well as my own research on the matter. By approaching issues from many angles, and trying to see the situation from others' viewpoints, I feel that a better general understanding of the circumstances can be reached resulting in better and more appropriate solutions to the problems facing our community.
5. What do you think will be some major issues your city will face a generation from now?
I am certain that the future issues our city will face will be concerning the supporting infrastructure (e.g. roads, electricity, and water). As our community grows we are getting closer and closer to placing too much demand on the capacity of our aging infrastructure, which has a great potential to create problems for our city. We need to utilize a phased approach to expand the capacity of these utilities and increase our ability to support our community's growing population.
